I played a crucial role in developing a scientific approach to the complex engineering challenges, which included material selection and processes, resulting in the successful construction and sailing of a 27ft dhow from Lamu to Zanzibar and around Lake Victoria. My efforts have contributed to the successful construction of a new version of a traditional sailing dhow and have showcased the potential for plastic reuse while raising awareness on the importance of addressing plastic pollution. Sunuru was a young cleantech start-up working on the development of grid-parity solar power systems. My activities ranged from business development to product development and prototyping. I was responsible for the leading the team on engineering and construction of our pilot installations.

For Heliatek I was working on the development of new applications for organic solar power systems. I was part of a small team, that during the time I worked there missed a formal lead. This gave me the possibility of having a very active role in the entire process. My work was relevant throughout all stages of the design process, from business development over industrial design to final product specifications. I was mainly focused on building integrated photovoltaics and outdoor products.

Solarbear was the company that came forth from my graduation project about solar powered adsorption refrigeration. Solarbear focussed on developing a low cost solar powered fridge for rural, not electrified regions. My responsibilities were mainly strategic and hands-on product development, R&D on technical and economic feasibility as well as prototyping. Numboards was founded as a company to produce surfboards (Pointtwenty surfboards) with the aid of our in-house developed CNC-foamcutting technology. After a necessary pivot, we focused on production of polystyrene foam parts for exhibitions, advertising, TV and theatre decors, large scale artworks and similar. My job included management, communication, design, preproduction and production. This two man company funded my studies and gave me real-world exposure even during university.
