Dr Leonora Risse is an economist who specialises in gender equality. Her research focuses on gender gaps in the workforce, including the gender pay gap and women’s under-representation in leadership. Dr Risse regularly engages with governments and organisations on evidence-based ways to close gender gaps and how to apply a gender lens to economic analysis and policy design. This includes undertaking gender responsive budgeting and gender impact assessments. Dr Risse is currently appointed as an Associate Professor in Economics at the University of Canberra, and a Research Fellow with the Women's Leadership Institute Australia, and serves as an Expert Panel Member on gender pay equity for the Fair Work Commission.She brings public policy experience having served as a Senior Research Economist at the Australian Government Productivity Commission. She previously spent time in residence at Harvard University, where she was a Research Fellow with the Women and Public Policy Program in the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Dr Risse earned her PhD in Economics from the University of Queensland. The topic of her PhD thesis was the provision of paid maternity leave in Australia. To elevate the representation and recognition of women in the economics profession, Dr Risse is part of the team of women who co-founded the Women in Economics Network (WEN) in Australia and served for three years as WEN’s National Chair.In her role at the University of Canberra, she leads the ACT Pathways to Politics for Women program - a nationwide initiative of the Trawalla Foundation which equips more women to run for politics across Australia. Complementing her economics credentials, Dr Risse also hold qualifications in journalism and communications. She contributes regularly to the media to empower everyday audiences with a greater understanding of economic issues.She is available to provide commentary and analysis on any of these issues of interest.
