I am a doctoral researcher at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), under the supervision of Prof. Pan Hui, Ubiquitous Computing/XR/Metaverse Expert, and Prof. Xu Yan, innovation policy expert from HKUST Business School. I am soon visiting the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence(CFI) at the University of Cambridge, where I will be mentored by Dr. Stephen Cave, Director of the Centre and philosopher specializing in AI ethics and futures.Since 2016, I have been deeply engaged in the development of VR/AR technologies, with a strong interest in understanding the roots of innovation in these fields. Together with my supervisors, I envision the Metaverse as the evolution of the Internet, exploring its technological and societal implications. My research focuses on how these technologies shape user presence, identity, and interoperability within Virtual Worlds and the Metaverse. Central to my work is the concept of "Self" in digital environments, where I investigate the cognitive experience and relationships among self-presence, self-identity, and self-expression. My research also contributes to a deeper understanding of the technical and social impacts of these emerging technologies, particularly in the increasingly integrated physical-digital environments. I have published several works on these topics. My current research interests encompass three critical areas:-- Interoperability in the next-generation Internet (Virtual Worlds/Metaverse): Addressing the challenges and solutions related to user identity and seamless integration across integrated virtual and physical environments.-- Anthropomorphic AI-driven agents/entities: Examining the effects of these nascent digital entities on human interactions and social structures, particularly how they influence relationships and social dynamics.-- Cultural tensions in AI development: Exploring how cultural values and social frameworks shape AI system development and deployment, and how embedded cultural biases may exacerbate geopolitical tensions. With over a decade of experience working in global technology and academic organizations, I synthesize practical insights with theoretical knowledge. My career goal is to bridge the gap between technological innovation and policy development, contributing to the creation of responsible and inclusive digital ecosystems that foster both present and future societal well-being.
