In the summer of 2018 I spent 5 weeks contributing to the research efforts of theQuantum, Light and Matter group at the University of Southampton. My workinvolved trapping nano-particles in a cavity using a complex optical set-up andlaser beam, then studying it’s apparent induced precession and rotational motion.I gained an appreciation for the sensitive nature of table-top experiments and thepatience required to acquire good data sets. It was a challenging and enjoyableexperience in which I obtained a good knowledge of experimental procedures andlaboratory protocol.

In the summer of 2014 I spent 8 weeks at the Centre for Astrophysics Research aspart of a Nuffield research placement. My project involved using the Wide fieldInfra-red Survey Explorer data release to search for a class of low temperature starscalled Brown dwarfs; specifically the T and Y spectral class brown dwarfs. I gainedmany valuable skills such as data analysis, problem solving and the ability to workboth independently and in group environments.
