I am a Scottish composer, arranger, and pianist. Born in Glasgow, I began my training at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland before moving to London to continue my studies, with Mark-Anthony Turnage, at the Royal College of Music. Since writing my first opera (‘Now’) in 2014, I have become a prolific composer of music for the stage, with commissions from several of the country’s leading opera companies, including the Royal Opera House, Scottish Opera, Glyndebourne, English Touring Opera and the National Opera Studio. My first main-stage opera, ‘Belongings’ (2017), composed while I was Young Composer-in-Residence at Glyndebourne, was shortlisted for a Young Audiences Music Award (2018) in the category of Best Opera, and received its US premiere in Minneapolis in February 2020. Other recent works include ‘Paper & Tin’ for English Touring Opera, which received over twenty performances this year in primary schools across the country, and ‘When the time comes’, a new work commissioned by Scottish flautist, Ruth Morley, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.Find out more at:http://www.lewismurphy.com & https://soundcloud.com/murph92

Team SupervisorWigmore Hall Nov 2014 - Dec 2021In this role, I worked closely with with the Duty House Manager to ensure the smooth, operational running of events at the Hall, while coordinating front-of-house and backstage activities. I took a lead role in the implementation of Health & Safety and Security policies and procedures: fire evacuation, counter terror initiatives, invacuation procedures, first aid procedures and accident reporting. I took operational responsibility for the safety and security of the building, ensuring that systems and procedures for security were followed at all times and that correct locking up procedures were followed. Also important to this role was an ability to manage a first class audience experience - to this end, I greeted members of the public, responded to enquiries, and maintained a friendly, confident and helpful manner. -
Young Composer In ResidenceGlyndebourne Jan 2015 - Dec 2017Lewes, England, United KingdomFor three years, I worked at Glyndebourne as Young Composer-in-Residence. This role encouraged me to immerse myself in the internal workings of an internationally-renowned opera house, including attendance at rehearsals, discussions with cast/creative teams etc. It also involved lots of my own creative work with the young singers at Glyndebourne, including Glyndebourne Youth Opera. The culmination of my residency - 'Belongings' (2017) - was subsequently nominated for a Young Music Audiences Award (2018), received its U.S premiere in Minneapolis in 2020, and will be performed in Paris in May 2023. -
