While at first I was simply a passenger in this process, once I grew older I started to take on a more important role in the process. I have been a supporting carer for the last 8 years, and for the last 5 have at times acted as the primary carer in the absence of my parents. This experience developed my interest and passion for psychology. During this time I have worked and lived with children who have a multitude of presenting psychological phenomena, such as autism, aspergers, gender dysphoria, selective mutism, eating disorders, attachment disorder and schizophrenia. This has given me hands on experience of dealing with psychological trauma and illness, which whilst not occurring in a clinical environment I feel is just as relevant to work in psychology.Alongside this work I have acted as a brand ambassador for fosterplus, attending conferences to talk to prospective foster carers about the experience of being a birth child in a fostering home.Responsibilities:" Working in an advisory capacity to introduce prospective foster carers and their children into a vocational career of foster caring." Interacting with challenging children with a multitude of psychological issues/phenomena on a day to day basis.Achievements: " Attending and helping to deliver the "Introduction to Foster Care" course for new carers several times, sharing personal experiences of foster caring." Been a positive influence on 23 different children from difficult backgrounds' lives" Gained a stronger natural understanding of psychology from my experiences Show less
