My position as Senior Resident Advisor (SRA) maintained all of the roles previously completed as a Resident Advisor, with the addition of further expectations of the new position. These expectations, detailed more below, were met with higher scrutiny of the quality of work. This is a result of closer work with the supervisory staff, as well as being another source of information and communication between the supervisors and the rest of the staff. It was important for me to be on top of what was expected of me, especially when working in the largest residence hall at Texas A&M, overseeing 690 Freshman Engineering students who resided in the hall.Mentored other Resident Advisors:As a result of the further experience and insight into the role of those serving in the SRA position, there is an expectation that the SRA will drive further motivation into the staff through leading by example. Additional responsibilities:For the residence halls to run smoothly, more duties sometimes need to be completed that can fall outside of the available time of the hall supervisors. To alleviate this, some of the more administrative duties fall to the SRA, and it is their prerogative to complete these tasks in a detailed and timely fashion. Balancing schoolwork and the RA expectations on top of these means time management skills become very important in this role.

The most important aspect of the Resident Advisor (RA) role is to provide a safe and welcoming community in which residents can find and create strong relationships with those around them. In order to do this, the role minimally requires strong interpersonal skills and a dedication to the residents of the hall. To excel at the role, time and effort must be put in, which requires RAs to learn how to time manage and plan events effectively. Hosting programs and events:A large part of the RA job is to plan programs to help bring the community together. This position helps teach about planning and budgeting creative programs that help draw in attendance. To plan effective programs, RAs must have a clear understanding of the community and a strong grasp of effective advertising. Many programs often have a presentation segment, requiring RAs to develop a strong capability when speaking to large groups of people.Addressing disputes and emergencies:Another important aspect is keeping the community safe. Clearly communicating the expectations of the residents at the start of the semester floor presentations is hugely important. Also, learning how to deal with conflicts and emergencies in the heat of the moment and keeping a level head when these situations do occur is a key focus of most of the RA training sessions.Balancing expectations:As a working student, it is of utmost importance to plan all of the deadlines and expectations. Keeping on top of a schedule is a practiced skill that must be learned to be successful at the role. This planning allows for more time to be allotted to all tasks to complete them to a higher degree of accuracy and creativity.

I worked as an intern contractor at NASA Langley with Jacobs, with the Pressure Systems Recertification group. The job of those working with this team is to ensure the safety and compliance of all of the high-pressure systems around NASA Langley. This unique opportunity allowed me to both learn new skills and explore various buildings and projects across NASA's Langley Research Center and meet a vast number of talented people in huge variety of fields and interests.Analyzing Engineering Drawings:My role involved analyzing engineering drawings of high-pressure systems of varying complexity and ensuring accurate documentation. Understanding the parts and pressure vessels on the system was important to verify that the system passed inspection on paper.Conducting Facility Inspections:After becoming familiar with the system on paper, inspections were conducted to verify the accuracy of the documentation to the system. Any inaccuracies were recorded to be updated in the systems, and the changes were checked for safety compliance. The system was also checked for any other issues, such as rust or mechanical wear. Once the system was checked and verified, the system could be recertified.Expanding my network:As an intern, there was some flexibility in my schedule to get to see different facilities and meet people across the center. Part of the internship had built-in tours of certain facilities, but I took it upon myself to schedule several more for all the interns in our cohort with the permission of our supervisors. These tours provided brilliant insight into some of the projects happening around NASA Langley, and allowed me to speak to many multidisciplinary experts across the center.
