I’m a third-year undergraduate student, studying a Bachelor of Biomedical Science (BBioMedSc, Major in Human Physiology, Minor in Human Anatomy), at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT). Between my second and third years of study, I completed 400 hours of clinical placement in the thoracic medicine department, at Cairns Hospital. I was able to assist in testing and diagnosing patients with a broad spectrum of respiratory diseases. This placement allowed me to apply and further build on my knowledge of respiratory physiology, as well as integrate the important aspects of rural health and Indigenous First Nations Health. After completing my undergraduate studies, I will apply to conduct postgraduate research at QUT. Following, I intend to apply for an MD program and study postgraduate medicine.I’m currently working at St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital, as a Theatre Orderly. My role working in the operating theatres consists of assisting with patient manipulation under general anaesthesia, patient transport, and assisting other healthcare staff in various ways. My role also involves organising and preparing different surgical setups according to which specialty of surgeons are operating, and what surgical procedures are being conducted. I periodically work 24-hour On-Call shifts, where I am a part of a small emergency team who are on standby for any cardiac, urgent, or trauma related cases.
