About Liam Hartley
If you asked me 10 years ago where I would see myself now, I would not have said being a penetration tester. However, over the past 4+ years I have spent my time to learning all I can about the world of cyber security, and I have loved every minute of it.During this time, I have gained a number of industry recognised certifications such as OffSec OSEP and OSCP, Zero-Point Security CRTO, and INE (f.k.a eLearnSecurity) eCPPT and eJPT. In my day-to-day, I perform a range of penetration tests against a wide variety of technologies including Windows and Unix infrastructures, web and mobile applications and APIs, cloud environments such AWS and Azure, network devices, SQL databases, and thick clients. A process that includes creating a high volume of scoping documents, as well as test reports used to inform and educate stakeholders, both technical and non-technical, to the dangers of security vulnerabilities and the triage required to remediate identified flaws and protect organisational assets. I especially enjoy learning new penetration techniques through online resources like Immersive Labs and Hack the Box. I recently had the pleasure of working with Immersive Labs whilst hosting a simulated cyberattack scenario against a fictional bank. This was a great opportunity to showcase hacking methodologies to technical and non-technical team members. In an effort to keep my mind active, I often set myself a challenge of learning something new. I thoroughly enjoyed learning how to speak German, although my Deutsch is a bit rusty these days. I’m currently learning how to play the guitar, much to the dismay of my neighbours. I’m also an avid amateur photographer. In recent years I have focused on automotive and motorsport photography. At first I was simply taking photos on my phone at car shows, but that quickly escalated into full-frame mirrorless cameras with multiple lenses.

Penetration Tester
CurrentAs a penetration tester, I am responsible for identifying security vulnerabilities in a large range of technologies such as Windows and Unix based infrastructures, web and mobile applications and APIs, cloud services including AWS and Azure, network devices, SQL databases, and thick client applications.I have experience using industry standard vulnerability scanning tools such as Nessus, Qualys, and Nipper. I also have strong experience using penetration testing tools, such as vulnerability exploitation with Metasploit Framework, Active Directory enumeration with Bloodhound, and domain exploitation with Mimikatz and Rubeus. I am also comfortable using a number of red teaming C2 frameworks such as Cobalt Strike and Sliver. As part of the testing lifecycle, I am responsible for producing scopes of work which require a detailedunderstanding of a wide variety of technical systems and applications. I am also responsible for producing clear and concise reports for each test completed, as well as supporting stakeholders with remediation and triage actions to resolve security vulnerabilities in a timely manner. Both elements requiring strong communication skills when engaging with subject matter experts and system owners.
Security Analyst
My key responsibilities as a Security Analyst was the management of security assessments and supporting penetration testers and projects throughout the engagement. This included facilitating meetings and calls with the relevant stakeholders and subject matter experts during the initial scoping stage. As well as organising pre-requisites such as access to the systems in scope, creating change requests for any required changes, and ensuring documents pertaining to the test were approved by the relevant persons.I was also responsible for providing support to system owners and project managers during after-test triage, ensuring that identified vulnerabilities were understood and acted upon by the relevant persons, facilitating further calls and meetings where necessary. As part of this role, I was responsible for managing a large number of tests at any one point in time meaning that strong organisational and communication skills were vital to ensure that project and departmental audit targets were met.
