ListenUp Mission Statement:To develop confident, capable young adults who understand the fundamental principles of mental health and possess the skills to navigate difficult conversations and avert a crisis through the mastery of listening skills.The ListenUp program is a call to action to address our nation's unprecedented mental health crisis. Rates of anxiety and depression tripled during the pandemic while deepening political divisions and economic uncertainty continue to fuel stress and isolation.There is an urgent need for more mental health support. Psychiatrists, psychologists, and others in the medical community struggle to keep up with multiplying mental health challenges. We can no longer solely rely on the existing support structure. It is time to invest in new approaches that provide mental health care before individuals reach the acute stage.ListenUp is an opportunity to broaden how we respond to the mental health crisis by incorporating listening skills, mental health fundamentals, and crisis management modules into the mainstream educational system. The course components are a compellation of experiences as a peer counselor, Samaritan's helpline volunteer, education chair holder at Washington University in Saint Louis, and college courses. Our vision is to see the inclusion of ListenUp in the standard curriculum to empower every young American to be a part of the support system while laying the groundwork for future success.The ListenUp program incorporates evidence-based techniques that identify various states of stress and anxiety and the appropriate coping mechanisms to manage them. It teaches the skills needed to engage in difficult discussions that will facilitate understanding and forge the ability to reframe our differences. More importantly, it can change the trajectory of this critical juncture in our lives.

Traveling to schools and different events, I lead an open discussion about mental health, suicide prevention and listening skills. Working with kids starting at about 11 years old, I provide a space to talk about suicide and mental health, and offer resources as well as tips and information about how to deal with your own mental health issues or helping a friend who is struggling.
