About Liam Mullany
I have long seen economics as the most effective driving force of social change, which is something greatly important to me. Though I started to read it during my time at university, and have continued to do so, I have until recently found the traditional models to be limited. This led me to pursue other avenues of altruism. For six years I have been a successful professional musician. This requires not only the diligence to practice intensely for long periods of time, but also the organisational skills associated with directing large groups of people, managing a business and utilising one’s time efficiently. While this career has satisfied my need for creativity, it does not have much scope to create social change. For two years I have been involved with running Greater Manchester Housing Action (GMHA), a campaign group that focuses on housing and homelessness issues. Our endeavours include an advisory role to the Mayor of Manchester, establishing a renter’s forum and conducting homelessness research. Recently, I ran a campaign to alter policy surrounding the transparency and format of viability assessments. This involved developing a policy analysis and creating a report with recommended changes. Through meetings with local councillors and a large petition, a back-bench motion was created and passed unanimously. These organisational skills, as well as an eye for policy and problem-solving make me an ideal candidate. This brings me to my current situation. As stated earlier, I find the traditional models of economics to have limited applications. However, a year ago a series of pop-economics books by Yanis Varoufakis posed economic thinking in a new light for me. This led me to his ‘Foundations of Economics’ book and I discovered there is a movement of economists (such as the Rethinking Economics group, who work closely with GMHA) who are taking a more pluralist approach to economics that excites me.
