About Liam O'Brien

After over 20 years as an applied researcher in various areas of software engineering including software and system architecture, SOA and Cloud. In 2010 I took up a more practical role as an Enterprise Solutions Architect. The experience was very challenging and interesting. I have learned and continue to learn a lot about what it really takes to architect software systems and how they are developed and deployed. My experiences at CSIRO, Geoscience Australia and other Australian Government Departments (now as an Enterprise Architect) have been very informative and I have gained a lot of practical experience and increased my understanding of Enterprise, System and Software architecture significantly.

    I worked on solution architectures for GA's National Positioning System GNSS, a new eGeodesy System, a merging of Sentinel (Bushfire Hotspots System) and WA's FireWatch System. I completed the solution architecture for several smaller systems that utilised Cloud deployments. I obtained a good understanding of using Cloud and have helped to define cloud deployment patterns for GA. While at GA I completed Disaster Recovery Solution Architecture Options for 4 of GA's Mission Critical Activities. I completed work detailing the activities for the redevelopment of GA's Geoscience Portal and architecting the National Offshore Petroleum Information Management System (NOPIMS) and a Data Harvesting System for GA. I also architected solutions for several of Geoscience Australia's major projects including the Information Platform for Bio-regional Assessments (IPBA), the CO2 Infrastructure Assessment Project (CIAP), redevelopment of the Sentinel System (Bushfire Hotspots) and the National Flood Risk Information Portal (NFRIP).
