About Liam Smith

--> Director and co-founder of BehaviourWorks Australia - one of Australia’s leading authorities on behaviour change. --> Editor of Inspiring Change: How to Influence Behaviour for a Better World (https://publishing.monash.edu/product/inspiring-change/).BehaviourWorks Australia (initially the 'Behaviour Change Initiative') was formed in 2010 after meeting Professor John Thwaites (Chair of the Monash Sustainable Development Institute and previous Deputy Premier of Victoria) and a conference. At that event, John concluded that not enough policy decisions are based on understanding human behaviour. With that idea in mind, BehaviourWorks Australia was briefed to bring behavioural experts together with the government and industry to find solutions to sustainability problems. Initially, as we were a small team my research focused on water, energy, waste, litter, pollution, climate change adaptation and wildlife conservation.Since then, I have been directly or indirectly involved in more than 600 behaviour change research projects. My research interests include waste resource management, biodiversity, spillover (how engaging in one positive behaviour affects the probability of engagement - or disengagement - in a second behaviour), and the synthesis of research evidence to inform behaviour change strategies and social inclusion.I also led the development of a unique research methodology (The Method), that informs, develops and designs behaviour change interventions and improves their efficacy. This has been distilled into our latest book; Inspiring Change: How to Influence Behaviour for a Better World. I have also published numerous research reports, papers and public discussion pieces. I am a member of the executive team of the Monash Sustainable Development Institute and was involved in developing the latest strategy, which uses the SDGs as a framework for tackling common and complex sustainability challenges. I am also a lead councillor on the Biodiversity Council, which aims to provide trusted expert voices on all aspects of biodiversity to Australians. I am also an active contributor on Zoos Victoria’s Science Committee, South East Water’s Customer Engagement Council, and VicHealth’s Leading Thinker Taskforce. I am on the Editorial Board of the prestigious Public Administration Review and the Board of Inclusive Australia, an organisation composed of some of Australia’s largest government and industry groups working collaboratively to identify strategies to unite the nation around the principles of diversity and respect.
