Hi, my name is Lily, I am a 3rd year QUT student undertaking a Bachelor of Design - major Architecture, minor in construction. As a current student of architecture, I am still quite ‘young’ in the field and find myself drifting from style to style, happy in the freedom given to us at this stage to find our voice,our purpose and direction - although direction was never hard for me to find. I grew up surrounded by art, engulfed even - my pa is soaked in old poetry, my nonna dances while Andrew plays us a myriad of instruments whether it be lute, ood, or violin. My grandmother sang in a band and my parents were never seen without a guitar in hand. For this reason I've always felt compelled and encouraged to create art. Rarely am I without a pen and sketchbook, or paint on my arms. I’m always creating, doodling ideas, messy sketches, clean renders, models, paintings, clay, pen or copic drawings. At the same time I was exploring my creative side, I was also pulled in another direction - the way of logic/math/ and construction. I've always been intrigued about how things work and growing up with 3 brothers I ‘d often find myself roped into helping fix bike chains, or scooter wheels - to be the small one to crawl under the house for the leak, or the extra set of hands as dad worked on the car. At the time these tasks felt like a chore but i realise now, they sparked my interest for how things worked, an interest fulfilled by minoring in construction. Exploring my degree I realised both my personal and professional beliefs were insync. Personally, I choose sustainability. I choose equality. I choose expensive fairtrade shampoos, recyclable cups, and overly priced organic food. These beliefs are mirrored professionally. by choosing sustainability, and vernacular design. When I choose meaning, and impact. It is because of my values and beliefs, that I want to strive to make impactful and meaningful designs that are built purposefully, and sustainability, with as low an environmental impact as possible. I want to create designs that leave the site and world better than how I found it - choosing reusable, eco-friendly options, implementing vernacular architecture.I am drawn to architects and companies who embody these values. I look up to Francis Kere, a Burkinabè architect, who returned to where he was raised to use the gifts he learned for the good of his community. I am inspired by 5 mile radius, a company trying to change the way we see and use materials encompassed by their brand motto “build with what you've got.”
