My PhD project is affiliated with HyTECH, the ARC Training Centre for Hyphenated Analytical Separation Technologies. HyTECH is a research and training program designed to deliver highly skilled, innovative, industry-ready analytical scientists. HyTECH scientists are equipped to tackle the most challenging analytical science questions across a diversity of the nation’s research and development priority areas, from advanced manufacturing to food and natural products, agribusiness, and the spectrum of environmental and health sciences. My PhD project utilises a hyphenated technology: pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to intestigate the fate and effects of micro and nanoplastics across human biological barriers.

The Green Ambassador Program (Environmental Council) at UQ is all about promoting sustainable actions and activities in the university community. As the student resources manager, I am in charge of:• coordinating the Sustainability Award applicants;• connecting with academics to promote our program to students;• maintaining the Reuse & Recycling Station on St. Lucia campus• facilitating eventsI was also in the review team of UQ's STARS (The Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System) report.

The program gave me a lot of insight into what leadership is and how to develop myself to my own advantage. I have also been inspired by my peers to step out of my comfort zone and seize every opportunity that comes. Through being a Science Leader, I've been able to get involved in many opportunities within the UQ community. Which included the following:• Information and induction sessions with the Faculty of Science International team as a senior student, sharing my experiences with commencing students and highschool students. The latter was a wonderful opportunity for me to practice public speaking.• Get Set Mentor: help new students with their transition into the university.• Peer Writing Mentor

I worked as part of the Public Relation team. My first role was to negotiate discounts for our members with local businesses. Working with my partner, we were able to sign contracts with 11 new local businesses within a few months. My other roles include organising business information and contracts, and designing a database using Excel that enables people to look up the details, category, signature product and signing status of businesses.

These three holidays I was lucky enough to have received scholarships to work at Queensland Alliance for Environmental Health Sciences (QAEHS) as part of a project. The project aimed at developing a method to remove interference signals when analysing high-fat matrices using pyrolysis-GC/MS, which allows for a more accurate quantification of polyethylene (microplastics) in a given sample.
