Why are there so many different languages in the world? How did this astonishing linguistic diversity come about? And what are the social, environmental and cognitive pressures that shape the evolution of languages in our species? These are fascinating questions that represent the topics of my research so far. My work focuses on linking core aspects of language learning, cultural evolution, and cross linguistic diversity using a range of novel behavioral paradigms and computational models, including swarm robotics, virtual reality, group communication games, and interacting deep neutral networks My goal is to shed light on the evolution of language in our species and to understand the ecological pressures and cognitive constraints that shape the emergence, change, and daily use of human language, and to identify the social, environmental, and cross-cultural factors that lead to language diversity and variation. I am also interested in animal cognition and communication, child development, human history, space, and data analysis. I am currently a Minerva research group leader at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, leading the group "Language Evolution and Adaptation in Diverse Situations" (LEADS). I am also a part time Lecturer in Social Interaction at the Centre for Social, Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience (cSCAN) at the University of Glasgow.

Phd StudentMax Planck Institute For Psycholinguistics Feb 2016 - May 2020Nijmegen Area, NetherlandsHow does social structure affect the formation of linguistic structure? My PhD project relates to the fields of Language Evolution and Language Change by examining how social structure can affect the structure of languages created and used in laboratory settings. The goal of this project is to explore how different aspects of societies (e.g., group size, network structure, identity of the learners, etc.) shape and affect the emergence of linguistic structure and compositionality in an artificial language game, simulating the process of cultural transmission and communication over time. I examine whether different grammatical structures emerge in different communities, and what are the optimal conditions for grammatical structure to emerge in the first place. Importantly, I try to tease apart the different social pressures that may shape the formation and distribution of linguistic properties, relaying on the classic contrast between Esoteric and Exoteric communities. -
