Profile bio

About Linda Mannila

I got my first computer, a Commodore 64, when I was 9 years old. It opened up a completely new world, as I suddenly had this wonderful and fascinating machine with endless creative opportunities at my fingertips. The early encounter turned into a lifelong passion, guiding me towards a career at the intersection of technology, societal progress and education.Despite being a proud geek and gamer at heart, loving technology and programming, I found my main interests related to inclusion, relevance and diversity. As technology changes everything, it is important that everyone has a basic understanding of how it works – just like we know the basics of other disciplines that have traditionally been used to form our society. If you want a 16 minutes or so wrap-up of my thoughts, you can have a look at my TEDx talk (linked below). Today I have over 20 years experience of pursuing my mission at the crossroads of technology, learning and societal development as a researcher, public speaker, educator, community builder and entrepreneur. I have a background in computer science, education and business, and thrive when I get to brainstorm, discuss, plan and try out new ideas. Not everything works out the way I expect, but that is part of the deal; nothing new ever came from doing the same things in the same way as before. I am a forever learner and my motto is that ”you always learn something”. If you think we should connect, just send me a tweet, IM or email! ---Digitalisation and tech in informal and formal education- integrating programming, computational thinking, making in K-12 education- digital competence, AI literacy, media literacy, safety and privacy - digital inclusion, outreach to underrepresented groups- professional development and projects- expert tasks, studies and reportsCreating digital experiences: digital city tours, virtual escape rooms, games for educationProject design and management, strategy workEvent organization: planning, design, implementation, facilitationCommunication, public speaking, networking and community building

Sep 2014 - Dec 2016

University Lecturer

Turku, Finland

My research area is computer science education, with special focus on computational thinking in K-12 education. Using computers and its applications is important but when all focus is put on the "consuming" aspects, students are left unaware of the big ideas and opportunities the technology offers to everyone - regardless of their future choice of study. My interests lie in creating ways of introducing the many faces of the discipline (concepts like algorithms, programming, networks, artificial intelligence, security, etc.) starting at early ages to help all children (girls too) not only use the technology but also get a basic understanding for "how it works" and what it can do for them. I also conduct research within educational technology, in particular on the development and use of digital learning materials. E-Math has been our largest project so far; a EU-project (2011-2013) for developing interactive mathematics books involving nearly 20 teachers and 1000 students in three countries. At the university, I teach courses on programming, data structures, human-computer interaction and mathematics. I work actively with curriculum design, and development of new course material and teaching methods. Empirical evaluation is an important part of both my research and my teaching - "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", but if it is even a bit broke, I believe it should be fixed. As a result of my passion for helping children see the wider opportunities of computing, I also organize different types of events for schools as well as teacher training in e.g. computational thinking and the use of digital learning materials. I am also in charge of organizing events for university students, in particular the StartIT-day aimed at first year students.

Aug 2012 - Dec 2016

Phd Student

As a PhD student, I developed course material and methods for introducing mathematics and programming to novices at high school and university. The methods were empirically evaluated in classrooms at both education levels. The result of these evaluations are presented in my dissertation, titled "Teaching Mathematics and Programming - New Approaches with Empirical Evaluation". During the years working on my thesis, I also taught 2-3 CS courses every academic year and was involved in a project providing CS courses to high school students online.
