Genus is publicly traded on the London stock exchange and enables the farmers and ranchers to produce high quality meat and milk more sustainably in over 75 countries. Pig Improvement Company (PIC) is Genus’ porcine division.A growing coalition of countries, businesses and other institutions are making climate commitments and there is particular scrutiny on agriculture’s environmental impact. Emissions reductions in animal protein are among the most difficult and costly to achieve, which makes credibly and defensibly expressing genetic efficiencies as environmental benefits a critically important opportunity for the food value chain. In my current role, I am enabling the protein chain to quantify and claim the reduced environmental impact enabled by genetic improvement and genetic innovations. This includes the mitigation of scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions as well as the creation of additional value streams through generated environmental assets. Additionally, my role is responsible for driving the commercialization of novel genetic innovations within the pork chain including those achieved through gene editing. Gene editing, as a precision breeding technique, can accelerate the sustainability of meat production by improving animal health, enhancing animal welfare, and enabling nutritious protein to be produced with fewer environmental resources. The food chain’s ability to raise the right animals will advance global food security while promoting holistic benefits from farm to fork. Our genetic platform is continually advancing this critical need. Show less
