In this role, I was responsible for overseeing all aspects of the circulation desk, including day-to-day operations of borrower transactions, patron account management and maintenance, customer service and complaint escalations, and training and coaching the staff. One of my successes during this time was the addressing the outstanding need for a single standardized source of reference for daily procedures and practices. The existing manual for the department was so outdated and irrelevant that staff no longer looked to it for guidance, instead relying upon coworkers for advice. Unfortunately, this had the "telephone game" effect, resulting in inconsistent quality of customer service, and staff and patron frustration. The manual had to be completely rewritten from scratch as attempts to simply update it proved frustrating, slow and inefficient. In tackling this task, I readily engaged staff in the department to foster open communication about: unclear procedures; aspects of their jobs they found frustrating, challenging or downright painful; and routinely asked for their input on the development of these procedures. In doing so, we, as a team, were able to improve upon many current practices.I am proud to say the the manual I designed is still in heavy use, and staff continue to ask for clarification and make suggestions for improvement. The manual is owned by the team, who feel empowered and engaged in continuous improvement. Certain tasks and aspects of patron transactions previously dreaded are now approached with confidence. The tool also fulfilled its purpose of addressing the long-outstanding issue of inconsistent service to patrons, resulting in far fewer complaints, less time spent repairing mistakes, and a more positive experience for our patrons and our staff. I was responsible for annual budget presentations to the Library Director, the assignment and oversight of all library collection budgets, and participating in and training the Library's Collection Development team. In coordination with the Library Director, and other library managers, I was responsible for scheduling for library staff, and entering and balancing time sheet information for payroll. I also communicated with the Library Board through regular reports, participated in and facilitated meetings with library staff, regularly communicated with library vendors and the Yellowhead Regional Library. I also created, from scratch, the Bibliographic Services Procedures Manual. At the Spruce Grove Public Library, all staff, especially managers, are required to be cross-trained in many of our various departments. This allows for greater flexibility in coverage for vacations and illness, as well as give staff a greater understanding of the interdepartmental ties throughout the library. As such, I have a great deal of experience in circulation and reference services. I provided coverage and support to the Public Services Librarian as needed, and worked a regular reference shift which kept my public services skills sharp. Show less

With no formal library education under my belt, I developed a number of programs including the ACT (Advisory Council of Teens), and the highly-popular and well-attended Manga & Anime Club. With the support of the Children & Youth Services Manager, I developed the first Teen collection, designed the new Teen Area (from furniture to multimedia aspects). Creating eye-catching displays, and interesting readers-advisory pathfinders was also something I enjoyed doing immensely. I also taught myself to use a variety of basic design programs to create posters and handouts to advertise the programs. I also had to teach myself basic coding in order to update the library's website via Dreamweaver software. Show less
