Developing young people talents, skills and ambitions has always been a passion of mine. For the past 10 years my focus has been in supporting young people to become active citizens within their community and to embrace all learning opportunities and challenges. My journey started with the founding of the community non-profit organisation ‘’Fusion Radio’’ in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The Radio station offered unemployed young people and young offenders the opportunity to learn a new skill, enabling them to make a positive contribution in their society. The organisation enabled me to empower the disempowered and to make a positive contribution to their learning.In the summer of 2009 I was elected to be an ambassador at the ‘’Your World’’ European Youth capital, which is a European forum designed to empower young people, boost youth participation and strengthen European identity. Taking up the responsibility as an ambassador I became the voice of the community, leading by example and always putting the needs of others first.My desire for social change was peaked after moving to the UK.I strongly believe that knowledge is power, and that change can only happen through education. Throughout the years in the UK I have been involved in initiatives that promote learning outside of the class room, healthy living and eating as well as soft skills development. I have supported young people through several LOtC sessions (E.g fencing, camping, Aeroball, archery sessions) as well as traveling abroad (Paris and the Netherlands), enriching their cultural exposure. All experiences have given me the opportunity to impact young people in a positive manner, however, no impact could have been greater than the one I make whilst currently working as a dean in Stanborough Boarding school.Being employed as the Dean of boarding, I have the privilege to shape the minds and attitudes of the next generation. Living and working with young people has taught be to flexible, caring and creative. My problem-solving skills were tested when dealing with staff conflict as well as students’ behavioural issues. My communication – and team building skills have improved immensely whilst leading a team of staff and liaising with other departments and external partners. All in all, I believe I have become a well-rounded individual who will always aim to make a positive contribution within the working and learning environment.
