About Lindsey Cherry
One of my favorite teachers in middle school would create awards for his students based on some subtle aspect of their personality or an endearing idiosyncrasy. I was thrilled when he presented me with the Susan B. Anthony Award a few days after I lambasted a sexist bully during his class. It remains one of my most prized possessions. My teacher’s recognition taught me a couple lessons that I have carried into my career. The first is the importance of truly “seeing” your students, colleagues, and friends, and to acknowledge – out loud – that you like what you see. The second is to stand up for yourself and others even when it seems scary or futile to do so.These lessons, along with the lasting impact Mr. Rogers and Lavar Burton had on my childhood, led me to develop a social justice perspective from an early age, and that perspective has only strengthened and solidified with time and experience. In every aspect of my career, whether it’s editing, writing curricula, teaching, researching, or designing a literacy or teacher education program, social justice has been the foundation of my work.My professional goal is, therefore, also personal: to use my skills in editing, research, writing, and speaking to address inequities and eradicate it through education that is accessible and inclusive.
