As part of the LIT Research, Development and Innovation (RDI), the Department Unit (DU) located at LIT Thurles works on various EU and National funded projects in the sustainable energy and renewable development fields, and my task is to coordinate, develop and train others in renewable and sustainable technologies for buildings, bioenergy and electric vehicles/storage in rural transport. A number of training programmes and on-site Apps have been developed for construction workers and professionals with emphasis on quality nearly zero energy buildings (nZEB) financing, business plans and energy efficient procurement. The DU also carry out dissemination activities on SM and websites through the well established networking framework at LIT.Various projects include: www.qualibuild.ie, www.a2pbeer.eu, www.train-to-nzeb.com, www.freedproject.eu, with newer projects: VET4LEC, Superhome 2.0, ManagEnergy and Educode. Previous to LIT, I ran an architectural business EJC O'Brien Architects providing a holistic design approach by incorporating sustainable energy aspects leading towards zero carbon rated buildings. During this time, I completed a Masters in Sustainable Energy Engineering at WIT, Waterford and involved in research on the energy performance of intensive green roofing systems in Ireland. In my spare time (not that I have much) I am actively involved with a community project in Donohill, Co Tipperary which includes an FAI international sized soccer pitch, walking track and the current development of a clubhouse to include dressing rooms and meeting space. It is envisaged that communal gardens, well-being apparatus, climbing and bouldering walls will be developed. The aim is to create a centre for social rural inclusion and provide facilities for all with maximum flexibility but maintaining a sustainable ethos.
