Race-Cars Trial Clinical Coordinating Center Implementation DirectorDuke Clinical Research Institute Jul 2019 - PresentDurham, NcThe RAndomized Cluster Evaluation of Cardiac ARrest Systems (RACE-CARS) trial is a pragmatic cluster-randomized trial that will test the implementation of community interventions to improve survival for people with cardiac arrest, one of the main causes of death in North Carolina (NC) and in the United States (US). The primary goal of the trial is to improve survival with good neurological outcome by 33%. Secondary goals are to improve bystander CPR rates by 33% and AED defibrillation prior to EMS arrival rates by 50%. My role is the Implementation Director for the Clinical Coordinating Center. In this role, I engage with leading health systems and counties to implement strategies to meet RACE-CARS trial goals. I oversee the day-to-day operations and focus on systems implementation for the enrolled counties. I travel to and communicate with participating counties, build and maintain relationships with the administration of medical dispatch, first responders, paramedics, emergency departments and community training resources. I am designing and leading training, tracking implementation of processes, working with the Data Coordinating Center (DCC) to ensure data collection, reviewing these data on a regular basis, and giving feedback on pertinent process measures to intervention counties to incent improvement. I plan and execute yearly site visits, yearly state meetings, and yearly regional meetings in coordination with RACE CARS leadership and the CCC, and hold weekly calls with each specialty group (911 and EMS) with intervention counties to help mentor on the 4 trial interventions. Sharing of best practices and successful QI tracker dashboard strategies are highlighted during study calls, and important documents and communications are maintained. -
Implementation DirectorDuke Clinical Research Institute Feb 2011 - PresentRaleigh-Durham, North Carolina AreaI am directing The IMPROVE Stroke Care project which is an implementation science study in the southeastern United State initiated by the DCRI. The goal of the IMPROVE Stroke program is to develop a regional integrated stroke care system that identifies, classifies, and treats acute ischemic stroke patients more rapidly and effectively with reperfusion therapy. The project will include identifying gaps and barriers to implementation of stroke systems of care, leverage existing resources within the regions, aid in designing strategies to improve care processes, bring regional representatives together to agree on and implement best practices/protocols/plans based on guidelines, and establish methods to monitor quality of care. The impact of implementation of stroke systems of care on clinical outcomes will also be evaluated. These improvements in acute stroke care delivery are expected to result in lower mortality and improved long-term functional outcomes. -
