About Lisa Carey-Woolls

Having gained considerable experience working worldwide within different schools both educating and supporting autistic students in the last 25 years, I am now focusing my efforts on training on behalf of the National Autistic Society, the Bristol Autism Team and also privately. Working within the field of Autism to enable communication and understanding for families and professionals worldwide, I know how scarce resources can be. There is often an element of "luck" involved with so many local authority catchment areas being badly under-funded and catching up from the effects of Covid. Usually waiting lists for support are long and parents understandably look to professionals for guidance and further education. My goal is to enable all the adults around an Autistic person to have access to a coaching based training programme. I deliver NAS courses and my own training called Autism Compass, in response to needs. I appreciate what a difference simply unlocking understanding can make. I have heard enough sad stories about untrained professionals expected to help an Autistic child in school and it breaks my heart for the child, the professional and the family.

My training programme helps teachers and schools support and educate their pupils who have autism by increasing understanding and communication skills. Typically I work with schools who need support and training for pupils as it is not always the case for children with autism to be statemented, and many will still need additional help with communication and learning.Autism Compass training is a 6 session programme, designed specifically as ongoing learning with information and practical exercises to compliment the education. Schools and teachers have access via their annual subscription to a wealth of resources and support which can be shared amongst all staff.• The programme runs over 6 sessions throughout a year and can be started at any time• No waiting for a course to run • It can be used for single or multiple staff alike• Training is applied "on the job" no supply cover is necessary for staff

I remain as chair of the Qatar EarlyBird committee and continue to support the development of the initiative in Qatar.
  • Margaret Coates Centre, Within St Martin'S Garden School
    Team Lead
Margaret Coates Centre, Within St Martin'S Garden School Sep 2011 - Jul 2016
    Bath, United Kingdom
This is a specialist Autism Centre within a UK mainstream school where I worked in for 20 years. Having joined as a teacher then progressing to leading the centre, it is very close to my heart. I expanded it from 2 classes to 3 (age range 4-11) and introduced parent support initiatives, and remain in contact with many parents and children. Children are taught the skills they need to ‘live in this world’, develop appropriate life skills, and establishing a predictable daily routine and consistent approach. This minimises anxiety, creating an atmosphere in which the children can learn. "Change” is built into the routine and staff work with the children to help them accept change as part of life.
