Autism Compass is a consultant based support service in Bath, offering training (4-6 session programmes) for both schools and parents. In the centre of Bath, a “stay and play” activity is also offered regularly. All training is designed specifically as ongoing learning with information and practical exercises to compliment the learning. Parents and teachers have access to a wealth of resources and support which can be shared online or face to face.
Autism Compass bridges the gaps between diagnosis, school and home life with education, support and training. The experienced consultant upskills teachers or parents in order that they feel confident to cater for the needs of Autism.
After delivering this programme to Browick Road Primary and Nursery School - Wymondham, Norfolk, a teacher gave this insightful feedback, "why didn’t I get a course of this quality and depth when I was being trained to be a teacher?”
Integration and inclusion imply that neurodiverse children need to be changed in order to stay in a mainstream setting. Current thinking is evolving further to challenge and change this assumption. Statistics tell us that one person in 60 is autistic. Schools and our wider education system need to adapt and cater for all.
