My research and writing typically explores the intersection of literacy and libraries, media & technology, children's learning and development, and educational equity. My current role includes directing the Learning Sciences Exchange (LSX) in the Education and Work Program at New America, where I'm also a senior editor and strategic advisor. One of my recent projects is leading the 1939 Library Sit-In Project, a New America initiative that started in 2022.I was a full-time journalist as a staff writer at the New York Times from 1999 to 2002 and at the Chronicle of Higher Education from 1996 to 1999. I continue to write articles as a freelance writer covering developmental science, education, and technology. In addition to the NYT and Chronicle, my pieces have appeared in Scientific American, Newsweek, Slate, Time.com, the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post, the American Prospect, Consumer Reports, and more.My latest book, co-written with Michael H. Levine, is Tap, Click, Read: Growing Readers in a World of Screens (Wiley/Jossey-Bass). www.tapclickread.org. I am also the author of Screen Time: How Electronic Media -- from Educational Software to Baby Videos -- Affects Your Young Child (Basic Books, 2012), which is an updated version of Into the Minds of Babes, a book that was first published in 2007.
