I examined possible virulence determinants of West Nile virus (WNV) by comparing pathogenic and nonpathogenic strains. More specifically, I assessed differences in innate immune recognition of WNV in the skin of infected hosts.
I developed experiments to test the antimicrobial properties of various glass coatings. I also utilized PCR to detect various virulence genes in strains of pathogenic Escherichia coli. Additionally, I isolated and sequenced large multi-antibiotic resistant plasmids from E. coli.
