During my time with Deloitte, my work was solely in the private client and owner managed business areas. I specialised in inheritance tax and trust taxation, with special emphasis on gifts with reservation of benefit, so called ‘double-trust’ planning and pre-owned assets tax. I also obtained experience in capital gains tax, both property related work and taper relief for owner managed businesses, EIS claims and qualifying criteria. I was also involved in a number of HMRC investigation cases, involving negotiating with SCO, in conjunction with the specialist enquiries team. In 2004 I moved to Deloitte’s Tax Policy Group in London. I was involved in Deloitte’s analysis of and response to the pre-owned assets legislation and this remains one of my specialist areas. During this period, I also spent time working with the DOTAS team. This was invaluable experience. I was also involved in writing and presenting internal training on the pre-owned assets legislation and other areas of interest to high net worth clients. In addition to other in-depth technical work, and complex cases referred by the tax practice, I was involved in Deloitte’s analysis of and response to the Finance Act 2006 trust changes and co-wrote and co-presented internal training on this topic.
