A Guardian ad litem (GAL) is a person appointed by the court to assist the judge in determining what is in a child’s best interest by conducting an investigation and making recommendations to the Court about what she/he believes is in the best interests of the children. A GAL bases his or her opinion on gathering and reviewing relevant information and interviews of the parents and the children and other persons who may be helpful, such as teachers, social workers and grandparents. A GAL may also review records, including school, medical, and mental health records. Best interest of the child means an outcome that serves or furthers the health, safety, well-being, education and growth of the child. The primary consideration is the safety and well-being of the child.
