I spent approximately 9 great years working for this boutique litigation and insurance based firm, with a focus on representing local councils throughout the whole of New Zealand. The firm has been front and centre in many of the leading cases where tort law, particularly negligence, has been developed in recent years. In addition to participating in multi-party court claims, much of my time was spent representing parties at mediation, leading to my becoming a strong proponent of alternative dispute resolution processes.

I practised at Vallant Hooker & Partners for approximately seven years, being made a partner in 2007.Vallant Hooker is a general practice with a broad private client base.During my time with this firm I had carriage of a wide range of civil claims, with the majority of these claims proceeding through the high court. My work ranged from insolvency based claims, through to partnership disputes and intellectual property litigation.

During my four years with this firm, I conducted a wide range of commercial litigation, predominantly in the high court. In particular I managed professional negligence cases against surveyors, solicitors and accountants. I also handled intellectual property disputes and a broad range of insolvency related litigation.

During my time with this firm, I had sole conduct of an extensive case load of a commercial nature. I also spent a considerable amount of time assisting as junior barrister in connection with complex commercial actions. Primarily instructions came from corporate clients, including banking institutions.

During my time with this firm I principally assisted the senior litigation partner with large, complex claims of a varied nature.I spent over a year assisting two Queen’s Counsel prepare for a case at the Old Bailey – the criminal prosecution of the directors of a major shipping company arising from the capsize of a passenger ferry in the English Channel, with the loss of 187 lives.
