I am on the faculty of Florida State University's College of Motion Picture Arts. Most recently my work is focused on youth engagement in climate activism, as well as the role of parents and families in organizing to address the climate crisis. I'm working on a documentary film project on these topics. A bit about my background: Over the past twenty years, I have developed educational programs and curricula related to film and media studies for K-12, afterschool, and teacher education; I have taught numerous college-level courses related to film and media; and, I have conducted ethnographic studies of young people's media use in school and home contexts. Specializations include:• Climate change and film• Children and media• Ethnography, qualitative methods• Diversity and inclusion in higher educationMy publications appear in journals such as New Media and Society and the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, and I am a co-author of Mizuko Ito et al., Hanging Out, Messing Around, and Geeking Out: Living and Learning with New Media (MIT Press, 2009). I also have a chapter in and J. Fisherkeller (Ed.), International perspectives on youth media: Cultures of production & education (Peter Lang, 2011).I am currently on the faculty of the FSU College of Motion Picture Arts. Previously, I was on the faculty of the FSU College of Communication and Information and was Associate Director of the USC Institute for Multimedia Literacy. My Ph.D. is in Communication from the University of California, San Diego, and I also have a B.A. in Community Studies from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
