DRC’s Investigations Unit engages in non-litigation strategies to eliminate the abuse and neglect of people with disabilities in congregate care settings. We investigate allegations of abuse and neglect in congregate care facilities such as state hospitals, developmental centers, nursing facilities, group homes, community crisis homes, jails, and immigration detention centers. We strive to address the intersectional needs of people with all types of disabilities experiencing abuse and neglect, especially those from traditionally underserved and underrepresented populations.In my role as IU's Managing Attorney, I:• Lead complex, detail-oriented systemic investigations into allegations of abuse and neglect on behalf of people with disabilities in institutional and community settings.• Oversee public policy initiatives and publish public reports, including media and communication strategy development.• Develop and participate in statewide and local committees, workgroups, and community partnerships. Appointed by the Director of the California Department of Aging to the California Elder and Disability Justice Coordinating Council, 2022 - present.• Manage and mentor a statewide team of attorneys, investigators, and support staff. • Expanded team from four staff to ten staff in less than five years.• Ensure compliance with federal and state grant obligations, including quarterly reporting on activities and auditing. Completely overhauled the Unit’s internal quality assurance process.• Conduct training and outreach activities with diverse audiences in and outside of California, including statewide and national conferences, in person and virtual. Topics include interviewing skills, effective communication, and intersectional movement building.• OneJustice Executive Fellowship participant and recipient of Certificate of Nonprofit Management, 2020 - 2021.
