The name of my doctoral thesis is “Temporal and spatial turnover of freshwater diatoms - Implications for bioassessment”. The focus of the first subproject of the thesis was on whether specific species traits and species local abundance and regional distribution affected temporal occurrence of diatom species. My doctoral thesis also included an examination of how stable diatom inferred stream classifications are in time and if pure spatial variation in diatoms should be considered when assessing stream water quality based on diatoms. The final aspect of the study was to determine which heavy metals, and to what extent, trigger the occurrence of deformations in the diatom Achnanthidium minutissimum. I was responsible for research projects, including research planning, laboratory and fieldwork, statistical analyses, international collaboration, acquiring and managing funding, and hiring of research assistants. I have an especially strong background in multivariate statistics (for example CCA, Cluster Analysis, GLM, PCA). In my PhD studies I did most of the analyses with the R software. I have also presented my research and findings in seminars and several international congresses. During my doctoral studies I had the opportunity to visit Dr. Marco Cantonati in the Museo delle Scienze, Trento, Italy (22.8.2011 - 22.10.2011).In addition, I taught the course State and future of the Baltic Sea at the University (15.3.-3.5.2012).I was on maternity leave September 2012 to May 2014 and July 2015 to September 2016. I analyzed data of threatened finnish species based on the IUCN Red List Index and carried out biodiversity investigations of agricultural lands´ buffer zones. I counted butterflies in the buffer zones with a line counting method. The butterfly study was part of the Follow-up study on the impacts of agri-environmental measures in Finland (MYTVAS).
