I am in my 35th year of legal practice. I focus my practice on four areas: litigation; government; employment; and nonprofits.In litigation, I handle a wide variety of cases, including business disputes relating to education law, contracts, shareholder and partnership conflicts, and intellectual property contests. I am an advocate for early dispute resolution.In my government practice, I handle a variety of litigation and administrative matters for local governments. My matters involve civil rights, education, FOIA, contracts, environmental, employment, election, injunction, nuisance, tax, and municipal finance issues.In employment, I represent employers in litigation matters and counsel employers on employment issues.I believe there is great value in a community having a strong nonprofit sector. For eight years, I have hosted a monthly roundtable of nonprofit CEOs dubbed the "Captains' Table" for a shared dialogue on the management issues and business challenges facing nonprofits. I counsel nonprofits on a variety of legal issues, including employment matters, corporate governance, and issues that can impact an organization's tax exempt status. I have served on the board and the Advisory Committee of the Greater Richmond Bar Foundation, a wonderful organization where they connect volunteer attorneys with persons of limited means and the nonprofits that serve them. I am a past president of “GRBF.”I served on the Sands Anderson board of directors for nine years, including five as president of the firm. I am AV® rated by Martindale Hubbell. I am included in the 2013-2023 editions of Best Lawyers in America© for my work in commercial, banking and finance, environmental, and municipal litigation. I have been selected for the 2023 edition of Super Lawyers® as a Business Litigator, and have been listed as such for the past 17 years. I have been listed for 19 consecutive years among Virginia's "Legal Elite" in Virginia Business magazine's annual compilation, most recently in 2023 for my civil litigation practice.
