About Nicholas Lombardo
I am a PhD candidate in the Yale Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences studying planetary climates. I study the dynamics of the atmosphere of Titan, the largest moon of Saturn. Titan's atmosphere is unique in the Solar System because, while it's made up almost entirely of nitrogen (like Earth), is also has a lot of methane. The destruction of these molecules leads to a complex chemical cycle which produces a global haze that obscures the surface. To study this astrobiologically intriguing world, I develop new features for a General Circulation Model (GCM) that simulates Titan's climate, including its winds, temperature, and chemistry. I am also a part of scientific teams who use some of the worlds largest telescopes to observe Titan in the visible, infrared, and radio wavelengths. With this data, I use remote sensing techniques to measure how the abundance of different molecules changes over time in different parts of Titan's atmosphere. Through this multidisciplinary study of Titan, I explore the underlying mechanisms that control the climate of one of the Solar Systems most enigmatic places.
