I always thought I wanted to be a doctor. I had a hunger for hard science for most of my adolescence until I took my first class in psychology as a senior in high school. Understanding why myself and others think the way we do felt like a second language to me. However, it wasn't until I began to struggle with my personal mental health as a college student that I considered whether my aptitude for social sciences could be combined with my lived experience to support the mental health of others.My clinical experience working as a emergency department medical scribe acted as a catalyst to drive me towards pursuing a career in psychology. It was impossible for me to not feel frustrated for patients whose mental health was not being improved by the medical model as I personally shared many of their struggles. Further coursework in abnormal and cognitive psychology allowed me to recognize that my knowledge of biochemistry could be combined into a successful platform for advocacy and treatment as a future scholar-practitioner.In my current role as a Level 2 CRLA Certified Tutor, I regularly practice active listening, powerful questioning, and positive collaboration with my learners to help them find passion within their education and support my growth towards a career in psychology. My coursework additionally enabled me to successfully lead a neurodiversity awareness training for my coworkers within this position. I continue to add to my psychology and tutoring tool belt by researching humanistic psychology practices, trauma-informed learning, and self-regulation of cognitive function.
