I work at the Children's Institute, University of Cape Town, where I play a central role in the production of the South African Child Gauge, and the design and delivery of our child rights courses for health and allied professionals.I specialise in finding creative ways to make complex ideas accessible to a wider audience - through a range of media from posters, policy briefs and opinion editorials, to learning and teaching materials. Over the past 20 years I have worked extensively with local government and NGOs to educate, empower and find creative ways of engaging with challenges on the ground - from child abuse and positive discipline, to early childhood development, nutrition and school deworming programmes. I am interested in appreciative approaches that foreground and celebrate children and families' strengths and resilience in the face of adversity, and in engaged scholarship that harnesses the power and resources of the university to promote children's rights, survival and optimal development.
