In this project, I was responsible for development of catalysts for one-step conversion of ethylene to propylene at mild conditions, and optimization of catalytic process. In the initial stage, reaction conditions were simulated by using Aspen Hysys software as a feasibility test. 1）For the catalyst development, tasks included：- Write a research plan and design experiments according to the research target ;- Make recipes, synthesize and test catalysts, evaluate activities of the catalysts ;- Characterize catalysts by using various instruments such as XRD, XPS, EPR, UV-Vis-NIR, GS/MS, HPLC, FTIR ;- Interpret and analyze experimental spectra and date to understand deactivation mechanism of catalysts in a molecule level and develop a second-generation catalyst.2）For process optimization, tasks included：- Design gas feeding lines and a fix-bed reactor according to experiment requirements ;- Design on-line analytical system and develop chemical analysis methods for measuring components of products on-line ;- Use AutoCAD software to create a PFD drawing for the whole catalytic process- Use Modde software and methods of design of experiment (DOE) to assess the effects of reaction conditions and experiment parameters for optimization of the process - Daily maintenance and safety check of the process - Contact with suppliers and follow orders of spare parts and chemicalsI synthesized and tested a series of catalysts and found the proper one in the end which was a new discovery. In the meantime, working in optimization of the reaction conditions provided me chances to develop my proactive and creative ideas for method improving.

Working as a research assistant, my responsibility was to renovate the test unit for butane dehydrogenation. Tasks included:- Maintain the unit and troubleshoot damaged parts;- Safety job analysis for the unit (HSE) and leakage check;- Use AutoCAD software to update PFD drawings for the process;- Install and calibrate temperature, pressure and flow rate controllers, solve Simulink software problem for the system control;- Coordinate with colleagues from different departments on schedules for effective work;- Validate and document startup and shut-down procedures.
