To bring innovation back to the R&D department, I set up a Research & Innovation team. After a pitch to the management team and HR, I was given the opportunity to focus on R&D innovations with a team of four. Within the first three months, we developed a new Sky platform that combines modularity, serviceability, and performance. Additionally, we designed a more efficient and cost-effective heat exchanger and doubled the efficiency of our latest air heater concept. We also delivered a functional specification for the new PCB platform in collaboration with the Hardware & Software team.Furthermore, I introduced improvements across the entire department and other business processes. I implemented a Kanban/Scrum workflow in Jira and Confluence and initiated an upgrade of our PLM system for better item categorization and mature release management. I led the project to upgrade the outdated Holmak app to a responsive web application and collaborated with a graduate student on designs for the new Brink Home & Pro applications. These initiatives also came from my own motivation and the desire to support the organization’s progress.

In 2022, I was promoted to team leader of the R&D development team. As team leader, I distributed product management and project tasks within a team of six people and led improvement projects to modernize our outdated lab and workflows. I took the initiative for important enhancements, such as installing a heat pump for air heating tests, upgrading the durability testing space, acquiring a leak tester, and automating our reverberation chamber. All these initiatives were successful additions, even though they weren’t part of my standard responsibilities.

In 2021, I started as a CFD engineer at Brink, where I focused on running simulations and lab tests for new products. I developed successful digital twins for pressure drop, thermal efficiency, and specific power input. This digitalization made a significant portion of physical testing unnecessary. I automated repetitive tasks by learning and applying Java. Now, simulation work, after CAD simplification, can be done at the push of a button, with everything handled for the engineer from start to finish. When Siemens couldn’t provide a Queue Manager for our new compute cluster, I created a Linux Queue Manager myself, enabling simulations to be processed automatically. I expanded our team from one to three members and broadened our expertise to include mechanical and acoustic simulations.

"Nobody has ever built a solar car before". This is what we often tell our latest group of student engineers when they start their journey. It is meant to convey the reality that nobody can design, built, test and race a solar car within a year with no prior experience. There will always be a large group of experienced previous team members behind the scenes who teach, mentor and facilitate to make sure that every edition of Solar Team Twente is a resounding success. Ever since my own edition I've stayed involved with Solar Team Twente to consult on aerodynamics, general engineering and project management.

As one of the Co-Founders I constructed the business case for the innovation edition. We defined, formed and guided the team which would eventually form the innovation edition. During the year I mentored them in engineering and project management and we eventually went to South Africa together to race in the SASOL solar challenge.

Casper is a conceptual proposal for a VTOL passenger drone. For the initial conceptual design I was responsible for the aerodynamics, flight control, motors and the battery.
