Research Projects:1) "Automated grading algorithm for free-text exam responses"Development of a ML algorithm for automated grading of free-text exam responses in Portuguese through the use of NLP tools. The main goal of this project is to help Brazilian elementary school teachers to grade exams with free-text questions.Research project from Center of Excellence in Educational Policies (CEnPE) of the Federal University of Ceará.What is the outcome of the project?A powerful Artificial Intelligence capable of helping teachers to quickly grade thousands of students in free-text textual interpretation exams.2) “Independent Vector Analysis for Fake News detection". - Due to the advancement of social media, the spread of information, as well as misinformation, plays an important role in society, particularly during high impact events, for instance, pandemics, natural disasters, and presidential election periods. This has been shown by Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19), where misinformation generates chaos due to the propagation of harmful health advice, fake vaccine schedules, and conspiracy theories. Recent Machine Learning techniques have been widely used and show promising advances to detection of misinformation. With this in mind, our goal is the development of an efficient Machine Learning algorithm for detection of misinformation during high impact events using Independent Vector Analysis (IVA) for data fusion from multiple modalities (text, image, video, etc.) through the use of several Python Image-Recognition and Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools. What is the outcome of the project?A data fusion method that is capable of reducing the dimensionality of data (Text, Image, Video,...) by up to 50x while keeping accuracy high and CPU time low. In this project, we have used a real dataset from Twitter and applied our algorithm in order to detect fake news during high-impact events, such as natural disasters, election periods, etc.

Research Projects: 1) “Estimation of Multivariate Probability Density Functions: An application to Independent Vector Analysis” - Estimation of multivariate probability density functions and development of multidimensional integration techniques based on Monte Carlo methods using the Maximum Entropy Principle with applications in the Joint Blind Source Separation (JBSS) problem.Key words: Multivariate probability density functions (PDFs) estimation, Blind Source Separation (BSS), Maximum Entropy Distributions, Monte Carlo methods.
