I am developing the fast ion D-alpha (FIDA) Doppler spectroscopy instrument for the C-2W fusion device. This instrument measures the quantity and velocity spread of the injected fast ions, which are key to C-2W operations. Insight into the fast ion behavior will help optimize C-2W performance. I run simulations on the TAE HPC cluster to help guide the instrument design and interpret the results. I am also modifying the optical system and its placement on the C-2W device to maximize signal quality and scientific utility. The instrument contains collimating lens, fiber optics, interference filters, a grating spectrometer, an image intensifier, and high-speed camera. I lead experimental runs on C-2W, initially to test/validate the FIDA instrument, and ultimately to deliver scientific insights leading to improved performance.

I am responsible for development of innovative spectroscopic diagnostic instrumentation and data analysis techniques to probe turbulent processes in fusion reactor prototypes. I aim to validate computational and analytic predictions for turbulence and transport, which is critical for understanding and controlling transport in future fusion reactors.

    Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory
I am researching the behavior of the neoclassical tearing instability in low-aspect-ratio tokamaks, in particular NSTX and NSTX-U. I work with diagnosticians to improve our ability to detect and characterize core instabilities, while also working with computational experts to apply theory-based numerical models (RDCON and M3D-C1) and compare the results against measured data.

    Graduate Research Assistant
    University Of Wisconsin-Madison Jul 2011 - Aug 2016
I used Bayesian statistical analysis to model electron temperature structures caused by tearing mode instabilities in the Madison Symmetric Torus (MST) plasma experiment. After identifying 'hot spots' associated with the tearing modes, I determined that the observed thermal confinement inside these structures was consistent with stochastic transport of electrons along magnetic field lines. I developed improved calibration and uncertainty quantification methods for the cutting-edge Thomson scattering diagnostic system on MST. I operated the system and participated in far-field alignment of the Thomson laser. I also became an experienced operator of MST itself, learning to 'condition' the machine and to run it at peak performance (Ip ~ 0.6 MA, Te ~ 2 keV).
  • University Of Wisconsin-Madison
    Graduate Teaching Assistant
    University Of Wisconsin-Madison Sep 2010 - Jun 2011
I lead discussion sections of about 30 students, involving both board work and small-group work, in addition to laboratory work. I graded exams and homework. I demonstrated problem-solving techniques, worked with students to understand their level of knowledge, and managed classroom and small-group interactions to ensure productive learning environment.
