About Lucas Murray

Research Scientist | PhD | R&D, biotech, medical devicesI am a postdoctoral researcher working in Dr. Charles Asbury’s single-molecule biophysics laboratory at the University of Washington. I currently work as an experimentalist to understand the mechanisms of the protein machines that pull chromosomes apart during cell division. I devise new techniques, processes, and instrumentation for single-molecule biophysical studies for my work and others in the lab. I communicate my data and results clearly and concisely both internally and to the broader community. My future aim is to be involved in research and development for a biomedical or biotech product. I excel in dynamic environments with high collaboration on cross-functional teams. My skills include experimental design, single-molecule methods, data processing and visualization, biostatistics, record keeping, and effective communication of scientific data. I am best known in my current role for innovating to solve tough process problems and optimization of processes for high-quality data collection. I attribute this to my attention to detail in process design and ensuring quality at all levels. Moving forward, I am most interested in directing my efforts to solving “bottleneck” problems, where solutions enable new information or technology. My supervisor and colleagues would describe me as a resourceful team player who is driven to persist and innovate when facing adversity.

Collaborated with a graduate student in the design, fabrication, assembly, and testing of an experimental gas phase reactor for nano-scale synthesis and catalysis. An electrospray apparatus was used to embed various nanoparticles in a mobile gas phase. Then a multi-chamber enclosed gas phase reactor was developed to control the resulting flow’s composition, temperature, speed, and pressure. A 35-Watt microwave laser was used to calcinate nanoparticles in flight. The team created a novel class of modular transcription factors known as RiboTALs. The transcriptional devices consisted of a hybrid system composed of two parts: Transcriptional Activator-Like (TAL) effectors which can be engineered to bind to and repress any sequence of interest, and riboswitches that can respond to any inducer molecule due to their engineerable and modular aptamer binding domains. I was heavily involved in the initial design conception of the project, and built the team… Show more The team created a novel class of modular transcription factors known as RiboTALs.
