The CSUEB Student Investment Fund was established in 2022 through alumni donations of $277,000 and has current assets under management of $540,000 (2024). The fund only invest in US equities trading on US exchanges with a minimum market capitalization of $1 billion. The fund provides hands-on experiential learning in financial decision-making, investment analysis, and portfolio management.The fund employs a bottom-up approach, and I specialized in the Information Technology sector performing fundamental analysis on over 200 companies. I used a multidimensional financial model to evaluate numerous valuation and risk metrics.I statistically scored each company in my sector using measures such as price to free cash flow, price to book value, firm size, financial stability (dividends and stock repurchases), efficiency (trends in margins over time), growth, and financial leverage. I used these statistical scores to create a shortlist of potential recommendations.From there I conducted in-depth research on the companies in my shortlist. I poured through analyst reports considering qualitative measures such as long-term sustainable competitive advantages, stewardship of capital by management, ESG, and weighed potential risks of each company.I then employed a comprehensive diversification strategy to target the same level of volatility as the S&P 500. I inspected stock correlations, underlying business models, and industry classifications to assess the fit of a buy recommendation to the portfolio.Based on the entirety of this analysis, I created an analyst report and pitched my buy recommendation to the Advisory Board, which was unanimously approved.In October 2022, I was chosen to represent CSUEB at the SMIFC Conference where we competed in the poster board competition explaining our fund's history, policy, investment process, and benefits.
