Lucas Oickle (M.Mus. University of British Columbia '15 | B.Mus. Acadia University '13) is an award-winning composer & educator. Originally from Nova Scotia, he now resides in Japan with his wife Chihiro and their two cats Taro & Ponzu. He is an associate composer of the Canadian Music Centre.As a performer, Lucas spent two seasons employed as a saxophonist with the Band of the Ceremonial Guard of the Canadian Forces. He studied saxophone for with Dr. Stan Fisher at Acadia University.As a composer, Lucas' accolades have included a SOCAN Foundation award (for his Three Songs on Poems by Vancouver Downtown Eastside Poets), a Nova Scotia Talent Trust scholarship (for a Sundanese gamelan study intensive in Bandung, Indonesia), and wins in competitions like the Canada-wide Penthelia Singers Canadian Folk Song Arranging Contest (for his arrangement of Farewell to Nova Scotia), the international TEMPO New Music Ensemble Call for Scores, the Via Choralis Composition Competition (twice, in both 2014 & 2016), and the Green Dot Journey Composer Competition (Atlantic region winner). In 2014, he was a recipient of the 2011 Canada Games Young Artist of Excellence Award, a monetary award of $10,000 presented by the Nova Scotia Talent Trust for “utmost commitment, promise, exceptional technique, talent, and the highest achievement of excellence” in music composition. Events he's been invited to write for have included major anniversaries like the UBC centennial, the 130th anniversary of the MCPA, and the 40th season opener of the NSYO. In 2017, his work Fifteen Decades for solo carillon won the Chime in, Canada! sesquicentennial carillon composition contest, a contest hosted by the House of Commons in celebration of Canada's 150th.As an educator, Lucas has been teaching English & music in various capacities since 2012.
