Thru-Hiker
The Pacific Crest Trail is a long distance hiking trail in the United States that stretches from the Mexican border to the Canadian border, with a total length of 4,270 km. The trail follows the Sierra Nevada and Cascade mountain ranges and goes through desert, old-growth forest, alpine tundra, grassland, and rainforest.I dreamed of hiking the PCT for many years, and so worked towards making my dream a reality. After a year of dedicated preparation, I started the most difficult and rewarding experience of my life. I got to find out what I’m capable of and discovered more grit in myself than I knew I had. It was a beautiful and wild adventure, and I would highly recommend it.
Project Manager
In this role, I organized the development team to ensure that everyone was on the same page about project requirements, timelines, and client expectations. This involved meeting with clients to understand their needs, creating sprints and their associated tasks, running internal meetings, and tracking the status of projects.During my time as the Project Manager, the company worked on seven different projects, with development occurring on two or three simultaneously. Once I was in this role, there were fewer revisions needed when the clients reviewed the projects. This happened because the client requirements and expectations were better understood by everyone involved in the project. Also, the developers were happier with the development process, as tasks were clear and they could effectively plan their work.
Full Stack Developer
Foundry Spatial has many clients across different industries, and creates data-driven GIS web applications that help solve complex issues. I worked on the small team of developers that builds creative and unique solutions to fulfill client needs. For the first time in my career, I was building complex applications from scratch. This meant that I was making decisions about architecture, which required a detailed understanding of all the technologies being used in the product. Due to the project teams being small, I had the opportunity to create large portions of applications and work at all levels of the stack.
Software Developer
At VertiGIS, I was on the small team of developers building the VertiGIS Studio Web product. This map viewer is built on top of Esri’s ArcGIS API and provides users with a vast collection of features that allow them to interact with the map, its layers, and its data.In my time with the company, I continued to build my skills as a developer. I worked independently on numerous new features from conception to completion, which improved my understanding of how to effectively build solutions to complex problems. I learnt a great deal about testing, and used Test Driven Development to achieve a high level of unit test coverage in new code. By creating proofs of concepts to integrate WebdriverIO and Transifex into the product, I learnt what factors are important when evaluating new technologies to determine if they fulfill the requirements of a product.
Junior Software Developer
SilkStart maintains an association management web application which allows organizations to track their users, invoicing, events, and more. While completing two co-op work terms at the company, I was on a small team of developers that worked to maintain the product, add new features, and resolve client issues. This was my first position working on production code and, thanks to the mentorship offered to me by the developers at SilkStart, I was able to learn a great deal in a short time. I arrived at the company with minimal development experience, but left with the confidence to build new features and root out obscure bugs. I also gained practical knowledge required by every developer, like how to work with version control software and properly review pull requests.
Research Assistant
I spent a summer at the SEGAL Research lab at UVic assisting with research for the Openness and Requirements Engineering in Software Ecosystems project. SEGAL studies how development is carried out within the software industry, with a focus on the interactions between the people who are creating software. While there, I collaborated a multi-disciplinary team on research for the Openness and Requirements Engineering in Software Ecosystems project. My work primarily consisted of writing Python scripts to acquire, store, and analyze research data.
