"An intensive two week program that bring 24 changemakers from around the world together to help launch the next era in Japanese higher education by co-designing a new Japanese ‘college’ in the community of Ōsakikamijima, Hiroshima. Participants will be immersed in the local community, partaking in cutting edge workshops, and learning from local and internationally recognized leaders in government, peace activism, and social entrepreneurship. Global TIES is an innovative humanitarian engineering program of the Jacobs School of Engineering at UC San Diego. Global TIES teams give students an opportunity to apply their skills in a real-world setting while learning the role that engineering and technology can play in solving the local and global problems. The project groups cover a wide range of engineering problems and requires collaboration, business acumem and leadership.Project Advisor Responsibilities: Serve the team as a liason between the University, the non-profit partner, Global TIES department and the project team. Offer guidance and direction, help designate roles and delegate power to team captain. Handle safety and adminstative clearances for the team. In charge of grade assignments and deliverables. Required to have gone throught the Global TIES classes prior to becoming a PA/TA. Teaching Assistant Responsibilities:Help direct students through ENG100D: Design for Development. Over the course of 10 weeks, students are asked to challenge themselves but using empathy to customize a solution for a non-profit that cater to unprivledged communities within San Deigo and globally. Teaching assistants grade homework reflections, give guidance to teams, and promote interpersional development skills such as problem resolution and time management.
