👋 Hello, I am Luis Serna. I graduated from Cal Poly Pomona with a B.S. in Business Administration with an emphasis in Finance, Real Estate, and Law.To begin my college journey, I majored in accounting, with the sole reason being that I enjoyed working with numbers. I knew very little about the opportunities with this degree outside of tax preparation. I did little research and honestly did not have a passion for accounting. I was, however, doing my own research on personal finance. I soon discovered a position working with disadvantaged, low-income, first-generation high school students through TRIO Upward Bound. Here, I found a passion for helping people reach their full potential through education. Early in the pandemic, we were tasked to create and present workshops to our students for online engagement. I immediately thought of personal finance as my topic. It was a hit! My students enjoyed the material and how I made the topics digestible. I enjoyed the experience because I knew I was providing information they wouldn't have found otherwise. In addition, I enjoyed it because I found my passion in finance and education.I transferred to Cal Poly Pomona with my mind set on finance. During orientation, I was focused on the clubs and opportunities offered, namely, the Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF). Through this opportunity, my passion for finance grew deeper as my cohort went through an intensive portfolio construction process. Along the way I learned economic analysis, asset allocation, historical asset class performance, Discounted Cash Flow model, and much more. This experience solidified my passion for finance and education, as I’ve had great professors along the way.
