About Luisa De Risio

I am committed to leading and facilitating scientific research to improve the quality of life and health span of as many animals as possible. I was fortunate to join Linnaeus as Clinical Research and Excellence Director in 2020, after several years in the non-profit sector and Academia in the UK, EU and US. My role involves making a tangible impact on Linnaeus’s clinical research outputs and the application of evidence-based veterinary medicine. This supports career development at Linnaeus and enables our professionals to offer contextualised care to our patients. To achieve this, I support my colleagues at Linnaeus and Mars in developing and sharing high-quality clinical research. I have developed new training and funding opportunities for fellow associates and established the Linnaeus’s clinical board. I thrive on collaborative teamwork and relationship building. I have worked with and led teams of people with different backgrounds, nationalities and cultures. I am proud to have developed the clinical research skills course for our interns and residents and have introduced the Open Access Publication Charge (OAPC) at Linnaeus – which supports the costs for associates to publish their research in peer-reviewed scientific open-access journals.As Linnaeus Clinical Board Deputy Chair, I have the privilege to work with veterinary surgeons, registered veterinary nurses, and patient care assistants committed to MAKE A BETTER WORLD FOR PETS and for the people who look after them.Postgraduate qualifications and roles:- PhD- Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Neurology- RCVS and EBVS European Specialist in Veterinary Neurology- Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS)- RCVS Ethics Review Panel member- Post Graduate Certificate in Veterinary Education by the Royal Veterinary College- Fellow of the Higher Education Academy- Honorary Professor at Nottingham Trent University (March 2021-2024) - Vice-President of the European College of Veterinary Neurology (2022-2024)Contribution to continuing educationI have lectured at numerous continuing education, and scientific meetings published more than 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals, written numerous book chapters and edited two textbooks on canine and feline seizure disorders. I have trained residents and interns. I have developed the Linnaeus Clinical Research skills course and various resources to promote clinical veterinary research best practice, including compliance with ethics requirements.

After qualifying from the University of Parma, Italy, in 1996, Luisa completed an internship at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of Parma University and subsequently at a referral practice in Paris. In 1998, 1999 and 2000 she worked as a visiting Resident at the Neurology Service at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of North Carolina State University, USA. In 2004 Luisa successfully passed the examination for the Diploma of the European College of Veterinary Neurology (ECVN). In 2005 she joined the Neurology/Neurosurgery service of the Animal Health Trust as Senior Clinical Neurologist and since January 2007 became Head of Unit. From September 2008 to August 2010 she has been a board member of the ECVN Examination Committee and from September 2010 to September 2012 she has been appointed as Chair of the ECVN Examination Committee and member of the ECVN Executive Committee. Luisa is the chair of the AHT clinical research committee and a member of the Postgraduate committee.Luisa has co-authored a book on seizure disorders in dogs and cats and is the leading author of a book on canine and feline epilepsy. She is a member of the International Veterinary Epilepsy Task Force. Luisa is Associate editor of the Veterinary neurology and neurosurgery journal (Frontiers in Veterinary Science), BMC Veterinary Research, the Veterinary Record and Veterinary record-open and reviewer for numerous veterinary journals.
