Profile bio

About Luisa Fernanda Bermudez Salazar

I am a passionate and hardworking plant scientist and professor with 14+ years of experience leading and conducting research projects in plant biotechnology and functional (epi)genomics. As a specialist in plant improvement, I use both classic breeding and state-of-the-art methods to enhance food and biofuel production, focusing on increasing plants’ resistance to environmental stress, yield and nutritional value. My formation was carried out in different countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, France and US), reflecting my ability to quickly adapt to changing conditions and multi-task under high demands. I have experience in working for both private companies and public Institutions, where I’ve developed great resilience and was able to strive even under time and resource constraints faced by researchers in South America. I choose to face my projects with the power of collaborative and multidisciplinary research for successful translational science. The excellent communication, problem-solving, decision making, and team leadership skills make me an excellent candidate for challenging tasks.

Listed skills include Plant Breeding, Biotechnology, Genetics, Crop Protection, and 9 others.

Head Of Science

Current

Boston, Massachusetts, United States

Dec 2023 - Present

Senior Scientist

Sunderland, Massachusetts, United States

Throughout my career, I have made it my priority to utilize current technologies and new techniques to generate elegant, creative solutions across a range of challenging research projects in plant biotechnology and functional (epi)genomics. I have been working through a holistic approach, including plant transformation, trait development and characterization and using a multiomics perspective. My experience as a professor has enriched myself even more with the freshness of young minds to not lose the focus on where we should aim our efforts. I came to Galy as a Senior Scientist to develop and optimize our process for in vitro fiber development, we had been working in a high throughput cell lines screening, using diverse techniques that include confocal and polarized microscopy, morphological characterization, transcript profiling, biochemical assays, among others. We utilize literature and “home made” omics studies to prioritize gene, hormone, and environmental condition targets for plant cell culture trait manipulation, and then mimic the fiber’s natural environment. We work as a team in a fast-paced environment where we can share our knowledge and learn from our colleagues.
