I lead legal, culture, and community work at a startup that aims to make open source better for everyone by supporting developers.

Advised clients ranging from Fortune 50 to new startups on technology, licensing, and community strategy, with a particular emphasis on "how to make money in open source".

I led the Wikimedia Foundation's Community Engagement Department, a group of 40 who worked across a wide range of cutting-edge community work, including supporting a multi-million dollar global grantmaking budget, educational programs, product work, trust and safety obligations, and more.

As Deputy General Counsel, I managed part of the legal department, and was responsible for a variety of legal issues critical to the Foundation, including open source licensing, product counseling, and all the organization's contracts.

Worked in the technology transactions group, focusing primarily on open source and free software licensing questions. Also handled M&A work, privacy issues, and traditional software licensing for a diverse set of clients, from small startups to the largest companies in the Valley. Besides transactional work, was heavily involved in the Google-Oracle litigation, selecting and advising Google's copyright expert witness, working as part of the trial team, and advising on technology, copyright, and open source licensing issues.

Led the drafting of version 2 of the Mozilla Public License, the open source license for the Mozilla Project, including Firefox. Worked on a variety of other projects, including open source licenses, standards bodies, privacy issues, bandwidth deals, and other commercial contracts.

Editor-in-Chief of Vol. X of the Columbia Science and Technology Law review. Made journal compliant with Science Commons Open Access policy and Durham Statement on Open Access—first such at Columbia.

Drafted Red Hat's internal guide to the (then-new) version 3 of the GPL. Initiated internal projects on license display for a planned software marketplace and web identity.

Initiating project manager for a spyware research and advocacy project in partnership with Google. Managed other center projects, including educational and digital music projects.

During the original "years of the Linux desktop", worked on QA and engineering leadership for Ximian's efforts in GNOME. Recognized as a 2004 Novell Employee Of The Year.
